Jon
- if anyone has contacts who might have an academic or theoretical interest in what would be the most effective short message techniques (i.e. whether you should be asking questions at both the beginning and the end or in the middle and at the end)
- need someone with an academic eye to help us think through the courses we’re developing with BRAC
(Greg)
- John Canny at UC Berkeley is the person to contact about that
- also Yousuf said that as far as recording the classes with video, Urvashi found that it’s very important to show the students in the live classroom answering questions
- this provides models to the students who are viewing the video on what is appropriate behavior
- this is overlooked in most distance learning courses
WikiSpaces Proposal
Saq
- had a call with them last week
- they were generally very receptive to our ideas
- we need a few API enhancements done
- they’re a bit slow in getting back to us but one of the key members of their technical team has been ill
- we’ve asked them for suggestions regarding content
- we’d like to do a two prong prototype
- the Hesperion text book will be one example of content that can be used
- we also want to use something from the existing Wikispaces community
- we’d like to do a two prong prototype
- I’ll get started with the mock ups this week so we don’t get too far behind while waiting
- the technical details should be sorted out soon so we should be able to move forward quickly
- need to write an adaptor for SOAP API in order to allow TW to talk to Wikispaces
Hesperion conversion
- would like to prioritze the conversion of the Hesperion html text into Wikispace’s format
- we chose Wikispace’s format over TW format because TW can speak both languages, so by getting it into Wikispaces, we automatically get it into TW
- Eric has familiarity with Perl so will help with that
- Adam at Tangient said they had some tools for format conversion, so Saq will ask him about that
- as far as data entry, we need to look into both what tools we might get from Tangient and the link that Martin provided (that Eric will work on) before thinking about the need for data entry services
(Greg)
- Hesperion used DigitalDivide data, a group in Cambodia that does data entry
- we might be able to provide them with a TW and ask them to type into this format
MORE
Priya
- spoke with Yousuf while I was in India
- last Saturday they started recording classes
- he’ll get back to me regarding what help they need
- I also spoke with (Urvashi?) who is interested in working with us
- also met someone in South India who is interested in the MORE project
- first project will be English as a spoken language
- until I hear back from Yousuf, I don’t know what the next steps will be
(Greg & Saq)
- we think it would be a good idea to get a workshop together to discuss the mobile based distance learning technique that we’re using
- Saq sent an email to Randy to introduce the work we’ve been doing and mentioned the previous contact with Urvashi, and asked him if we can have a discussion about how we can best work with them and help
- also asked if they’d be willing to host the UM sponsored workshop in India sometime this year to bring together the right group of people to work out
- some of the core concepts of how the technique should work
- issues we might be facing
- and how best to proceed
- we will also coordinate with BT folks on how to organize the workshop
- not sure where the workshop will take place – maybe New Delhi
(Saq)
- what are the next steps
SharedRecords Back Up
Eric
- after a troubleshooting session with Cory, we now have a working ‘post’ mechanism for SRs
- when you submit the post, it responds back with a thank you message and a link to the copy on SRs so you can right click it and bookmark it
- if you go to any tiddler on tiddlytools.com, and from the MORE menu in the tiddler tool bar, there’s a ’send’ command & in there there’s a choice for SRs test
- when you choose that, just follow the form that pops up and hit ’send’- then it will post to SR and give you a link to it
- the last part of the puzzle is to figure out how to hide the form but still submit it
SharedRecords
Jon
- we have a working “record broker”, which takes a generic file, turns it into an intermediate database & then creates a SRs entry, allowing you to have what looks like a normal file system to an end client application over WebDAV actually talking to SRs back end
- in the data base we’re storing the link to the unique identifier that is created on SRs along with the encryption key, so we’re basically extracting out and you have a WebDAV server now that we’ve done for the ServiceLink project
- there’s code that we’ve written in Java that implements the methods we needed
- we’ve been working on the barcode server which will allow anyone to create a generic QR code or a code 128 barcode with any random digits
Goals for 2008 & Associate Tasks Pages
Greg
There has been some discussion at the following site. Please look through the goals and add thoughts in the discussion area.
http://tasks.projects.unamesa.org/2008+Goals
(Saq)
- since the Community PlayBooks project is in its infancy, should it be included in the 2008 goals?
(Greg)
- It’s not a pilot at the moment as it’s being conducted through a group at Ricoh
- when it’s ready for a proposal, then it will be added to the projects
- I’m hoping the user stories will be a part of that process, but don’t know yet if it will be generally useful to the community at large
- this will be used as a method for replicating successes in other projects, such as MORE, instead of being a project on its own
(Saq)
- a key thing we need to do is to figure out how the goals that we’ve made public will correlate to the different projects
- I’d like to add on one internal goal – to improve our own working habits and communicating what’s being worked on and completed
- we’ve already taken steps towards that with the task pages
- i.e. if I need to know about a facet of one of the projects, I shouldn’t need to directly contact the person involved, I should be able to go to the wiki for that project and find at least the base info that I need, then if more detail is necessary, they could be contacted at that point
(Eric)
- the table format may or may not become unwieldy with time
- over time, a different format may work better
(Greg)
- I suggest using the list of tasks as a ‘to do’ list, where each item is a link to a wiki page where more details can be found
- recognizing that each person may come up with their own way of handling this, when you find something that works well, please share it and maybe detail it on your tasks page
* the logs will be reviewed before invoices get paid
Assigning of Copyrights to UM
Osmosoft would like to assign copyrights of client and server codes of one of their projects to UM
(Greg)
- I don’t see any reason not to pursue this
- I think it’s mostly a matter of who actually owns the copyright and what do we need to do for them
- I need to understand when and how they want the transfer to happen
- I’ll contact Jeremy about that this week
Action Items
Martin
- send Perl scripts to Eric
Saq
- forward to Priya the email message sent to Randy
Greg
- send Jon the email of John Canny at UCB
- contact Jeremy regarding the copyright
Priya
- update on feedback from Yousuf
- update on database back end
